Installation Note
Kyocera-Mita Linux Support using PDQ

Installation Components

Kyocera Mita devices are supported on Linux (and other UNIX's) through the Pdq print system. The installer places the pdq and xpdq applications in the usr\local\bin directory. It also installs drv files for each supported Kyocera Mita device and man pages to document both applications. Xpdq is a graphical print tool design for printing and monitoring print jobs. Within an Xwindow session, you can control the driver settings and manage print jobs.

Installation of the Kyocera Mita support can be accomplish in two ways: the RedHat Package Manager (rpm) installs the compiled source code to the proper directories or for users familiar with installing software via compilation, select the tar file provided.

The following Kyocera Mita models are supported in the drv files:

Km1010ue.drv, Km1050ue.drv, Km180pue.drv, Km1900ue.drv

This package has been developed and tested primarily on Linux systems, although it should be suitable for any form of UNIX. If your system supports pdq, this installer will successfully add Kyocera Mita device support. For non-Linux platforms, compiling from the source is the preferred method.

For more information about pdq, visit http://pdq.sourceforge.net/

Xpdq requires the Gnome Gtk/Glib libraries be installed on the system. This may present a problem for earlier Linux versions or another flavor of UNIX. RedHat  6.0, SUSE 6.3 or Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 already have these libraries. To verify the presence of the required libraries, type the following command:

    gtk-config --version
    glib-config --version

If both of these commands return a version of 1.2.0 or higher, the libraries are installed. If not download the latest Gtk/Glib.libraries and instructions at  www.gtk.org  and install them.

Installing from the tar file

Before using a tar file installation, verify that the installation Gtk/Glib libraries as described above.

Follow these steps to install the Kyocera print solution using the tar file:

   command line:

    tar zxf pdq-Kyo-km-2.2.2.tgz

    cd pdq-Kyo-km-2.2.2

    ./configure

    make

    make install

Installing from the rpm file

To install using the RedHat Package Manager (rpm), enter these commands:

    command line:

    rpm -Uvh pdq-Kyo-km-2.2.2-1.i386.rpm

or use the KDE kpackage system, Gnome's gnorpm or a simalar GUI rpm application.

Setting the default printer

To verify a successful installation, type at the command line xpdq &. With all Kyocera-Mita printer drivers installed, establish a default printer by highlighting the desired model then selecting the Printer drop down menu choosing Set as default printer.

Setting the printer port

All drivers are initially installed with the output port set to /dev/lp0 (usually parallel port 1). If your printer is on a different port, you will need to set this port now.

Highlight the desired model in the Selected printer list, select the Interface options button and enter the desired port name into the Name of device text box. Select Okay to save this setting.

Setting Printer Features and Options

To select model specific printer options, follow these steps:

1.  Highlight the desired model in Selected Printers.
2.  Select the Driver Options button.
3.  Select the desired printer features and options for the model
4.  Select Okay

Printing

To print a (postscript) file, simply enter on the command line:

    pd. <filename.ps>

Printing directly from an application depends on how the application is designed. For applications using the command lpd to facilitate printing, replace lpd with pdq if the application permits it. If not, as in WordPerfect for example, print to a file and then use pdq to print the file as described above.

For further information on printing refer to this website:  pdq.sourceforge.net or the man pages (e.g. man pdq / man xpdq).

Print Jobs

Xpdq displays the status of the current print job and older jobs. To display the details of a print job, highlight the job and select Show details from the Job menu. This menu also contains options to cancel, delete and resend the highlighted job.

Printer Options

Each Kyocera Mita printer has a set of configurable options (page size for example). To configure these options, run Xpdq, highlight the desired printer model and click the Driver options button. Now scroll the list to find the option you want to configure, set the option, and click the Okay button to make the selection permanent.

Known Issues:

FS-8000C A postscript error occurs when sending a print job to the cassette One (1) when the FS-8000C has a Duplexer Installed; to avoid the postscript error do not send printable jobs to Cassette One.
